Why these classes?
White Mage
Losing family made him realize it's best to have some way of healing to oneself or others. Also felt like the best choice considering it saved him from certain death.
Red Mage
Healing wasn't enough to save the people he loved, but he still wanted to be able to heal and resurrect. It was not too difficult to learn either, so why not?
Dark Knight
Being a "hero" is tough, so what better to do than get tougher than the path that lies before you.
Reaper
There is something... Compelling and familiar about taking the role of a Reaper.
Before Gridania
To put it blunt, Vlin is the son of an Elezen man from the Dzemael family and an Au Ra woman from the Orl tribe. It is unknown where the woman went after giving birth to a baby who though had the appearance of an Elezen.Vlin was given to a middle class family of three and raised in Ishgard, spending a good amount of time at the First Dicasterial Observatorium. He gathered firewood to help in warming the people who worked in the general area of Coerthas Central Highlands. His efforts surprisingly did not go unnoticed by Francel, who has seen Vlin make rounds from the Observatorium to Camp Dragonhead, and they become fast friends though their meetings were short, mostly from Vlin handing over firewood.Once was there a time when Francel brought up the idea of going to Camp Dragonhead with Vlin to say hello to a good friend for a quick moment while Vlin handed off some firewood. On that day did Francel notice a change in Vlin's demeanor, something with a touch of hesitance and being unable to look at the man who looked after the camp, Haurchefant. With curiosity, Francel lightly brought what it was about once they were back at the Skyfire Locks, and he's met with stutters and a hint of a blush. One can say that the knight from House Fortemps and him became closer friends since then.Moons passed and all seemed well until Vlin's parents were accused of heresy, though he doubts that the claim was true. Regardless, the family tried to escape Ishgard in fear for their lives. The three were unfortunately separated in their attempt, the parents never to be heard from again. Having little knowledge of where to go and who to turn to despite the friends he's made, he ran past them all to reach the Black Shroud until he found himself at the East Shroud.There he met a Garlean, and though he knew that they were not to be trusted, this particular man was scarily persuasive in encouraging him to follow him all the way back to Ala Mhigo. It wouldn't help that the Elezen was somehow more afraid of Ishgards knights than the mutual enemy of Eorzea.It was then that the other's intention to use Vlin for experiments in the Resonatorium relating to Hydaelyn's gift, the Echo (albeit artificial), was revealed, and he was unable to fight or run away. There is some success with possible "thanks" to Ishgardian blood being mixed with dragon blood. With regret but little resistance did he play the part of a toy for 2 or so years, spliced with genes and such of voidsent creatures, not knowing what he'd do if he were to escape somehow anyway.The Elezen was one day "discarded because of defects," thrown off someplace at the brink of death, and traveled mindlessly as far away as his legs could take him. He eventually found his way back to the East Shroud and collapsed.Waking up, he found himself in the Conjurer's guild in Gridania, slowly recovering from the damage the Garleans have done to him, and it was there where he found his talent for conjury and his motivation to aid those in need as the job did for him.

Vlin isn't his real name as it's different to Ishgardian sounding names. It was a quick name he came up with for himself, a part of his experiment code that looked something like "V-LI-N." Attempting to remember what his real name is would be hopeless...
...However, one would think that in meeting Haurchefant, the knight would remind him of his true name. It is true that Haurchefant and some others has called him so, but the name now feels distant to him...
...And while his new name would perhaps be the same, Vlin thought it more of a small symbol to begin anew, reusing what came from so much pain into something to be proud and happy of.
He likes to put a glamour of the Fortemps earrings on every earring he can.
Freckles on most places, if not everywhere.
Both his eyes were a shade of green before the experiments. It was after that did his left eye change to a red color as a hint of the Artificial Echo with him.
He rarely has glasses on, but it does help a bit with the change of his eye...
...When the Artificial Echo's eye is active, however, Vlin would cover it up with a band (looks like a Crystarium Blinder of Aiming) as it strains his eyes and he worries it scares others.
Because of the splicing with voidsent and its mix with dragon blood, it's possible for him to change in appearance to one that looks similar to an Au Ra. It's only happened a few times that usually lasts less than a day, but there were times that it would take a week or more until he changes back.
Vlin is also unaware that he was adopted and don't know who his real parents are.
The cool air of Ishgard and other cold areas do not bother him as much after the experiments.
Vlin has second thoughts and doubts about being called a Warrior of Light.

The man who saved him from the brink of death, as well as the man who he has had the pleasure to journey with for as long as he began. It would be no question that the Elezen grew attached to him after their many adventures together.

Vlin's first retainer who was quite reluctant in taking the job over his starry eyed dreams of being an adventurer himself. He has, however, grown to enjoy the (usually) simple ways of his job as a Botanist, as well as the company Vlin has to offer.
